A colleague made an interesting comment a couple of days ago:
There seems to be a general perception that being a successful venture capitalist is all about finding the next Google. I would actually say that successful VC investing is all about knowing when to invest in a certain company, how much to invest and under what conditions.
Quite right. Clichés and stereotypes have their place, no doubt, (that's why they become well-established in the first place) but sometimes hype overpowers reality. Of course, successful VC investing is also about good investment monitoring, achieving successful exits and all the rest, but to quote all of that here would be a trite truism.
