A couple of weeks ago, I was selected to be a lead user (like my i-mode trial) of the Samsung T10 mp3 player and the Samsung SBH500 Bluetooth headset, which is sold separately (Google them, I can't link to them right now). I get to use these gadgets for free, talk about them, review them (as I shall here) and generally have fun with them. In return, Samsung receives feedback from me and other lucky duckies like me and potentially free marketing. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me -- for both parties!
So let's start with the player.
The 2GB version, which is what they've given me, retails at S$199. It's a flash-memory device, which means that there aren't any moving parts. Jiggle it, wiggle it, just don't step on it. There are other versions going up to 8GB (S$349).
The first thing I noticed was the packaging, of course. Sounds funny to say it, but I liked the packaging. It was functional, colourful, not too funky and even innovative, with a little pull tab to get the player out of the box. Weirdly enough, I also liked the screen image as I turned it on. Maybe that was just the glee at getting a freebie!
I wondered at the lack of a charger though and was quite puzzled until I read the manual much later (yes, I read the manual, cover to cover, it's not that long) which told me that it charges by connecting to a PC.
But after I'd turned it on, I was flummoxed. The menu has a dancing dog for an avatar and several sundry animated bits, and I kept getting stuck in some sort of loop as I tried to figure out the navigation. I also found the animated routines quite childish so the first thing I did, even before I tried out the player, was to figure out how to change the entire look and feel of the thing. Thank goodness they'd built in some other themes -- but couldn't they have made the default theme something simple in the first place?
I have several more things to say about this nifty thing but they'll have to wait, because I have a flight to catch! More later.
Overall positive. I'd buy this myself. If you want a discount for buying this and live in Singapore, try this: http://apps.vocanic.net/appsSamsungTracker/start?code=219615
